Bug List

ID 20 bugs (specific) and ask why it exists:

1. Delay Getting to Talk to a Service Representative: Experiencing the lengthy and unpleasant menu and sub-menu selections when you call a customer service department at a company if pressing 0 or saying "representative" over and over doesn't get you to a real person. This is especially frustrating if you have to enter your account information into the automated system, just to be asked for it again by the representative who "doesn't have access" to the numbers you just entered in the system so you have to provide it again.

Why? I know there are departments in corporations responsible for the company's telecom menu. They gather data on length of calls, number of transfers, etc. However, I do not know why they want to make your experience miserable.

2. Being Different Sizes in Different Brands of Clothes: Trying on the same item of clothing, for example a pair of jeans, in the same "size" in different brand stores has widely varying results. I could see small variations making sense, since there would be differences in style, but the wide difference of results for the same article of clothing of the same "size" is illogical.  This video better expresses how I feel:

Why? Why can't we just measure our waist and hips in inches or cm and then select the pants with the corresponding measurement? I don't know.

3. Unique Plug Shapes for Individual Electronics: I have so many power chords. Even within the same company's product line, such as Apple's iPhones, there is a unique plug for the corresponding individual electronic, such as the plug for the iPhone 4 not working for the iPhone 6 or my old mac laptop charger not working for my new mac laptop. A universal charger compatible with all small electronics would be immensely beneficial to humanity.

Why? I can only assume to make money. My puppy ate my Apple Watch charger, which Apple sells for $29, it is of course a new charger style that the market has

4. Junk Mail: I have to waste a few minutes of each day looking through the pile of junk mail in the mailbox. As I confirm each item of mail is indeed junk and not something ACTUALLY important, I then drop the junk mail into the trash. Once, I was so angry that I didn't know how a random company I have never heard of got my name and mailing address, that I called them up and insisted on knowing how. That's when I learned that it is because I had a profile with a different company that I either needed or wanted to have contact with - that company sells their data to other companies for money. How much of a landfill is made of junk mail? How are companies allowed to get away with this behavior with today's environmental mindset?

Why? Mail marketing campaigns are still very successful ($), just evil and soulless.
My million dollar idea is to create little trash bins that hang on your mailbox so you can throw out the junk mail directly at your mailbox.

5. Magazine Insert Cards: Damnit, magazine, you just made me drop something! I'm bugged by magazine insert cards that fall out of magazines, which is what they are intended to do.

Why would we like being given a chore?
Evidently no one know why since this question has been posted since 2010:

6. Summer Break from School: Work is year round. If you're not a teacher, you don't get summer off. This causes a lot of frustration and cost for parents who need to find "something to do" with their children during the summer-long school break. Either school should match the work schedule, or work schedules should match school. I think it's more likely school would change to match work since work brings in income and companies

Why do we have summer break still? Here's an article, but in summary it is because the majority of people insist on doing things the way we have always done even though it makes no sense. Don't believe me? See the next bug, weddings are another example of the same thing.

7. Wedding Ceremonies: I'm all for marriage. I'm all for celebrations of love and gatherings of family. However, I do not like that people decide the only way to properly express their love is by going through the series of rituals that Germanic tribes used for feuds settled by peace marriages. Having bridesmaids, a bouquet and these other "wedding" traditions is the least personalized expression of a couple's love. Do something unique to express your unique love. Do not do a bunch of ritual motions that have lost their original meaning and have actually zero relevance to you. I'm not talking about religious elements of a ceremony, the Bible does not say you must have bridesmaids and hire an expensive florist.

Why? Again, people just do things the way they've always been done, even if it means spending $30,000 or more. Here's a better article for the interested student... http://www.infoplease.com/spot/weddinglore1.html

8. Diamond Engagement Rings or ANY Engagement Ring: If you want to marry someone, just marry them. I don't understand why only one person in the couple needs to wear a piece of jewelry that says they are planning to get married. The typical engagement ring doesn't put anything on the man to label him as taken... boyfriends don't wear anything to show they are unavailable to other ladies... I'm so confused by the inconsistency! I'm not against a wedding band to show someone is married, but why does the female need both an engagement ring and a wedding ring on her finger? Is there something better about showing I AM A PLANNED MARRIED WOMAN instead of someone with one ring on saying I AM MARRIED SHORT NOTICE.

Why? Marketing, and the continued theme that people just do things the way they have always been done without questioning it.

9. Driving Through a Parking Spot: When I'm at Publix, the parking lanes are one way and the parking spot are diagonal. People who drive forward out of parking spots and go the wrong direction down the lane put people following instructions correctly at risk. It's pretty unnecessary.

Why? Backing up can be a pain in the butt. Maybe all cars should have back-up cameras and sensors to make backing out stress free, simple and safe.

10. Watching a longer commercial than the youtube video you wanted to see: I don't mind watching commercials on YouTube in exchange for free video content. I do mind when I can't skip a commercial and it results in watching a commercial that is longer than the video clip I was trying to access on YouTube, such as a 1 minute ad for a 30 second video clip.

Why? Maybe the ads are randomly generated, so no matter the video type or length sometimes you just have to watch a long ad? If not, maybe these are targeted because you're so committed to seeing the video you're willing to watch the ad?

11. My pink streak only lasting 20 days! When I have my hair colored, highlighted, low-lighted, or dyed whatever other way, that is my permanent look except for the new hair growing in. After having my hair stylist put a pink streak in my hair, I expected the same: a permanent pink streak on the hair that had been dyed. To my surprise, the color was gone 20 days later. I spoke to other people who dye their hair non-natural human hair colors, and they have the same experience. The best quality product (which I confirmed is what I have) lasts 3 weeks, but it is the best quality product not because of its endurance but because it does not bleed, for example your colorful hair doesn't stain your pillow.

Almost no one could afford revisiting their hair dresser that often to have the color touched up, so why doesn't it last longer? My hair stylist theorizes that people who color their hair with these colors get bored of their hair color quickly and want to be able to change it, so having temporary hair colors is actually a "pro" not a "con" of the product.

12. Printers Not Working Reliably: It's the year 2016. We have self-driving cars and incredible technologies on our cell phones. "Your smartphone is millions of times more powerful that all of NASA’s combined computing in 1969" so why doesn't the printer work reliably? Sometimes it prints sometimes it doesn't. Some days it has new exciting problems, like printing some of the document on a second page that doesn't appear on the computer screen. Sometimes it is "out of ink" even though there is plenty of ink in the cartridge is complained about. It gets a paper jam way too often. This is making me frustrated and killing productivity.

Why? I think printers are designed to break down within a year or two so we keep buying new ones. I also think companies make critical revenue selling the ink (which perpetually needs replaced even when it is a new ink cartridge it is still too "low" for the printer). This must be the business model of printer companies. It seems immoral.

13. Whoever Doesn't Pick Up Their Dog's Poop: As a dog owner, you take on certain responsibilities, one of which is picking up your dog's poop 100% of the time it is not on your own personal property. To be specific, our residential neighborhood has a garbage can and dog poop bag dispensers on EVERY BLOCK but every block is littered with poop in the grassy areas... within FEET of the bag and garbage. To be even more specific, when we are at the dog park there is a distinct gentleman who comes around the same time: he walks in, sits at the bench nearest the entrance and sits with his BACK to the dog park the ENTIRE time while his three large huskies roam the park and poop. He is obviously intentionally not caring where his dogs poop. We have twice gone up to him and politely informed him that his dog has pooped and where the poop is located, both times he has not gotten up to get the poop. We have a new plan for how to respond the next time this happens... part of me really hopes it does.

[No Photo, You Are Welcome.]

Why? Thankfully there is a study and others who share my rage.

14. Having to wash my hair after working out even though you're not supposed to wash your hair every day but you are supposed to work out every day: My doctor says washing my hair too often is what is drying out my scalp. If my skin dries too much it would cause flaking... definitely something to avoid! But to be healthy, I need to exercise daily. It's not really exercise if I'm not sweating, so let's say the recommendation is to get a good sweat going daily to be healthy. If I don't wash my hair after sweating, it looks matted and greasy. Washing and shampooing my hair makes it clean and grease-free, but I'm not supposed to wash my hair everyday. (Dry shampoo help somewhat but it's not really the same as a good hair wash)

Why? Life is complicated.

15. Hotel check in and check out times. This weekend it would have been convenient to get to the hotel room first thing in the morning instead of the afternoon, so could work from the hotel room instead of interrupting the work day with hotel check in. However, the room would not be ready until the afternoon, which was check in time. After enjoying the party that night, there's nothing we'd love better than to sleep in and then eat a brunch to cure our hangovers, all on a leisurely schedule and at a slow-moving pace. What really happens is the hotel needs you out, OUT, by 11am, and your vacation isn't that relaxing. Maybe there's a business opportunity for vacations from your vacation? The core of it that really bugs me is that from check in time, typically 3pm, to check out time, typically 11am, is not 24 hours. I understand that you pay for a night at a hotel, not a day at the hotel, but you don't have to leave in the middle of each day when you stay multiple nights.

Why? I'm impatient, but besides that it's an inefficient use of time. Recently at Swan and Dolphin hotel in Orlando, the hotel reached out to ask our arrival and departure times. They then coordinated the room availability with our schedule. For example, we didn't expect to get in before 10pm, so whoever was in our room before us could have slept in and enjoyed almost a full day in their room without detriment to our experience.

16. A restaurant making you wait to be seated even though you see empty tables: This bugged me a lot before I had it explained to me, but now it bugs me that hostesses don't properly explain to patrons why they are waiting. I know they are thinking the same thing I used to think. Why am I waiting when there are plenty of empty tables? It didn't make sense.

Why? Because the timing between seating tables within a server's section is a major determining factor of the quality of service you receive. If a table has just been sat in that section, the server can't take beverage and appetizer orders for all tables all at once, you'll end up waiting either at the table or at the door, but waiting at the table is the definition of bad service. Just like most customers, I am willing to wait a little bit in order to have a better dining experience, to me it is worth it. I think others would feel this way if they were told what was going on. Additionally, "reserved" signs help indicate a table is purposely empty now because of a party arriving soon.

17. When you need to leave a restaurant but can't find your server to run your credit card. It feels like they purposefully disappear even though they KNOW it's time to run your card because they dropped off the check to you 30 minutes ago. (I exaggerate but you know the feeling) You would happily get them yourself and hand off your card but you really can't find your server, they have not been spotted by you and you've been keeping an eye out by turning your head a lot and rocking from side to side.

Why? Bad management at the door or bad floor management. I audited restaurants for work, so therefore I am an expert and my answer is right.

18. Ad Flyers on Your Parked Car: I'm uncomfortable that someone went up and touched my car while I assumed it would be safe to leave it unattended in the parking lot. I'm bugged that a stranger assigned me a chore: throw away a small piece of paper. It's annoying, wastes my time and is bad for the environment. (Similar to my magazine inserts)

Why? We certainly have to interact with the ad in order to remove it from the windshield and drive away safely. I think we are also more likely to read the ad so we know who to curse and blame for putting trash on our car. Therefore the ad reading is successful, but it creates a negative association in my mind for that business and I am definitely NOT patroning it if I can help it.

19. Sinks with round knobs: Some of the sinks in our family home have round knobs for hot and cold instead of other, easier-to-grip styles, such as levers or X-shaped knobs. Why sell round knobs that make it so hard to turn off the sink after washing your hands?

vs.

Why? My best guess is that the designers didn't realize that until after it was too late.

20. Getting Served Food Too Hot To Eat (for a few minutes): It really bugs me when I'm starving and my food arrives too hot to eat right away without burning my mouth. I have to sit there, staring at the food I want to eat, watching it cool off until I can eat it. It's a very special kind of torture.

Why? Many people like getting served piping hot food. My boyfriend for example resists any effort to call ahead for take out. He places take out orders in person (delaying eating and then I'm getting hangrier--I mean hungrier and hungrier), to ensure the food is fresh and as hot as possible when we get home. He doesn't like reheating it because it changes the texture in his opinion and the food is not quite the same as when it is fresh.

Was this assignment hard for me?
No. I often think, "I wish they would make me manager of this place for a week, I'd turn it around and wouldn't have to put up with these problems!" My fellow high potential coworkers and I often converse about customer service frustrations we've recently encountered and how we would brilliantly solve the encountered problem if we worked for that company. It's what we do for our company, so it's just habit at this point.

I am also, by nature, a hater.

But finding the time this week WAS difficult!

  1. This is an awesome list!!! You had me laughing with your graphics! The clothing sizes is seriously the worst! Anyway, I get where you are coming from with many of these and share similar views in being able to piece through daily life finding intricate things to just make life better. You definitely have a grasp of the small, fine things in life that create experiences and make customers happy!

    1. I totally agree with Jason. Although you may be a hater, you bring real passion and enthusiasm to your hatred! It's going to be great having you in class ... that skepticism is a very valuable trait ... it'll help us make our ideas better and think more clearly in class. I can't wait.

  2. So I decided to open a word document and view your list as I made my comments. Starting off from the fourth one, I also cannot stand Junk Mail. I still have my original email for aim and I logged onto it recently and it has 12,928 emails I really hope nothing important was sent to that email account. Summer break is a bug for you? What!? As a student I loved having summer break, it gave me hope the second half of the year, I am pretty sure without summer break I wouldn’t have made it out alive. And as an adult I love it even more! Less traffic, means I can sleep in and get to work earlier than when school is in session. I might just stop reading this list after this one. I can definitely relate to 10, it was also on my bug list (my solution walk away and get something to drink or use the restroom and then restart the video). I must confess, I am one of those that does not pick up after my dog, isn’t dog poop supposed to be good for the lawn? Ad flyers are the worst especially if it rains and then gets glued on to your windshield. All in all great list except for that school one!

  3. Great list Christie, you are making your fellow Hoya so proud! I hear you on number 15 – that’s why I stay loyal to SPG, so whenever I travel I can check in as early as I want and check out at 4pm! Loyalty to brands in certain aspects of your life really does pay off. I was actually discussing #17 with a friend recently over dinner – we had to wait 30 minutes before we were able to flag down the waiter. I think that would be an easy one to fix through the expansion of mobile payment systems – why do we even need to wait for the check these days? Just give your phone number to the hostess at the start, and when you are ready to pay, just use Apple Wallet. We will get there, I am sure. Great job!
